The artistic structure of this car-
pet, included in the group of carpets
with complex compositions, con-
tains a central field and a border.
The “Balig” (fish) carpet has been
made on the basis of the “Afshan”
composition of the Tabriz group.
Unlike the “Afshan” carpet, the cen-
tral field of the “Balig” carpet has
been trimmed with short motifs in
a net-like symmetric order. One of
the main elements of the carpet, the
leaves, is depicted in different forms,
either with serrated or non-serrated
edges. As the leaves resemble fish,
they are called “Balig” (fish) among
weavers. Some short motifs are ex-
panded and complete the number of
spirals and leaves.
Five- and six-petal flowers are de-
picted in the upper and lower sec-
tions of the rhomboidal elements
and in the blank spaces of the cen-
tral field while eight-petal flower
motifs appear in the center. The
flowers have been trimmed with
ivory, brown, pink and light green
colors. The elements trimmed with
quiet colors are more vivid on the
red background.
The main black border of the car-
pet has been decorated with dark
red, pink, light green, light brown,
and ivory flowers and leaves. The
major border is surrounded with
white minor borders trimmed with
“gaychibalig,” eight-pointed stars,
and small partially visible foliage
motifs on both sides. The colors in
the major border are repeated in the
minor borders as well. The edges of
the minor borders finish in “sichan-
dishi” (mouse teeth).
