The carpet has a rich central field and simple border. The carpets called “Baghchada gullar” were woven from the second
half of the nineteenth century mainly in Shusha, then in other carpet-weaving areas of Karabakh, as well as in the Nakh-
chivan region of Azerbaijan. The carpets woven with this composition at first were called “Gul yaylig” or “Gullu yaylig.”
Then such types of carpets were known by the name of “Baghchada gullar” in the different weaving areas of Karabakh.
The ornaments on the carpets woven with this composition were created under the influence of Russian decorative-
applied works of art. From the second half of the nineteenth century, the expanding of cultural and economic relations
between Azerbaijan and Russia led to increased prosperity in trade. In the trade centers of Nakhchivan, large silk shawls,
fabrics made from calico and other material, and trays made from metal imported from Russia were widespread. Local
carpet masters used the ornaments on the fabrics and shawls and copied “khokhloma” patterns from Russian trays onto
carpets. “Sakhsida gullar,” “Baghchada gullar,” and “Bulud” carpets included a new type of composition created based
on Russian decorative-applied art.
“Alpan” carpets woven in the Quba region of Azerbaijan are also considered this type of composition.
