Carpet. “Butali.” Wool, pile weave. 477x116. 1870.
Nakhchivan Group. Azerbaijan.
The red major border has been arranged on the basis of elements called
“gaychibalig.” Ivory, green, and red main flowers, large and small eight-
petal flowers, and geometric elements with serrated edges are also depicted.
The flowers combine with each other in a chain within the ivory minor
borders.
The central field and major border are surrounded with red chains.
Contrasting colors are well represented in this carpet. The warmth of dark
blue and red is calmed by the use of ivory.
The pile, warp, and weft of the carpet are wool. The condition of the carpet
is excellent. The carpet is of artistic, historical, and scientific importance.
