The artistic composition of this carpet consists of a rich central field
and a border section.
The basic decoration of the dark blue background central field consists of two blue
background and one red background “gyol” (medallion). The selvages (self-finished
edges) of the “gyols” are scalloped. Medallions with hook-like selvages are placed
inside the “gyols.” Elements in a checkerboard pattern have been trimmed inside the
medallion. These elements are trimmed with white and dark brown.
Incomplete medallions with hook-like selvages, spike-shaped motifs, octagonal
medallions, lozenge elements with stepped selvages, stylized man-woman figures,
“goshabuynuz”, “dord unsur”, four- and six-petal flowers, and other elements are
depicted in the gaps of the central field.
There is a “darag” (comb) element inside the quadrangular “ketebe” on top of the
medallion on the central field. “Darag” elements are found in various types of Azer-
baijan decorative-applied art. This element is a sign of spiritual purity.
The white background border of the carpet is decorated with border motifs called
“horuk” (braid), typical to Shirvan carpets. These motifs are designed in red, blue,
dark green, yellow, light brown, and turquoise. The border is surrounded by “me-
dakhils” trimmed with yellow, laurel-colored, and blue z-shaped motifs on both
sides.
This carpet with its bright color design creates a good mood in anyone who sees it.
The pile and wrap is made of wool, but the weft of the carpet is made from cotton.
The storage condition of the carpet is adequate. The carpet is of artistic, historic, and
scientific importance.
