A delegation consisting of members of dif-
ferent American states’ legislative organs
visited Baku at the invitation of SOCAR.
SOCAR was the official sponsor of the “Eu-
rovision 2012” Song Contest Final held in
Baku and SOCAR invited a large delegation
of Americans representing the legislative
organs of different states and consisting of
Congressmen and Congresswomen, Sena-
tors, and well-known public figures.
More than 50 Members of Congress, 19
Senators, mayors, current and former pros-
ecutors, former ministers, and art figures –
altogether more than 100 people who influ-
ence American public thinking – accepted
SOCAR’s invitation to participate in the final
of this very important music contest and to
become familiar with the recent socio-eco-
nomic accomplishments of Azerbaijan.
While touring the interesting sights of
Baku, the guests visited “Azer-Ilme” Carpet
Company. The American delegation was
introduced to ancient carpet samples in the
company’s “Magic Knots” gallery and was
given thorough information about our na-
tional heritage as it pertains to the carpet-
weaving art. The guests were interested
in carpet production and the rich exhibits
demonstrated in the gallery. The members
of the delegation stressed that they highly
evaluated national carpets that are distin-
guished by their quality. New Mexico Dep-
uty State Treasurer Mark F. Valdes, member
of the New Mexico House of Representa-
tives James E. Smith, member of the Arizona
Senate Paula Aboud, member of the Florida
House of Representatives Hazelle P. Rogers,
and Outreach Coordinator at the Turkish
American Chamber of Commerce Elif Sen
specifically expressed their admiration for
Azerbaijani hand-woven carpets with deli-
cate patterns made of naturally dyed yarn. In
conclusion, the guests were given gifts pub-
lished within the framework of “Azer-Ilme”
Company’s “Azerbaijani Carpets with All
Their Schools” project: the book “Azerbaijani
Carpets – Iravan Group” and the magazine
“Azerbaijani Carpets.”
